Pediatric Eye Care Q & A

When should my child start pediatric eye care?

Pediatric eye care is an important part of your child’s overall health and wellness.

The American Optometric Association recommends that infants undergo a comprehensive eye exam at 6 months of age. After that, children should have a routine eye exam at age 3 and then again at age 5 or 6, before starting kindergarten.

School-aged children without vision problems or eye conditions should have an eye exam every two years. If your child wears prescription eyeglasses or has an eye condition, then they should have an annual eye exam.

Bainbridge Eye Care provides comprehensive pediatric eye care for children 5 and up.

What happens during a pediatric eye care appointment?

Bainbridge Eye Care specializes in pediatric eye care. They conduct a kid-friendly eye exam to identify eye conditions and vision problems.

During a pediatric eye care appointment, your provider may first talk to you about your child’s medical history and vision concerns, if any. Then, they perform various tests to assess your child’s vision and eye health.

To evaluate the structure and function of your child’s eye, your optometrist places eye drops in their eyes to temporarily dilate the pupil. Then, they use special lenses and microscopes to closely evaluate the eye and surrounding tissue.

After the examination, your provider discusses the findings with you. This may include vision changes that require prescription eyewear or an eye condition that needs monitoring or treatment.

What are common pediatric eye care conditions?

Bainbridge Eye Care specializes in many pediatric eye care conditions. Some of the most common conditions they manage include:

Strabismus

Children with strabismus, or crossed eyes, may not be able to focus both eyes in the same direction at the same time. This condition may occur in children with poor muscle control or farsightedness.

Bainbridge Eye Care detects, manages, and treats any signs of strabismus in children. Treatment may include prescription eyeglasses, prism lenses, or vision therapy.

Myopia

Children with myopia, or nearsightedness, can’t clearly see objects that are far away, and their vision may progressively worsen as they get older.

The providers at Bainbridge Eye Care specialize in early myopic progression in children. They use many tools to control your child’s myopia and prevent or delay severe vision changes.
