When should my child start pediatric eye care?

Pediatric eye care is an important part of your child’s overall health and wellness. 

The American Optometric Association recommends that infants undergo a comprehensive eye exam at 6 months of age. After that, children should have a routine eye exam at age 3 and then again at age 5 or 6, before starting kindergarten.

School-aged children without vision problems or eye conditions should have an eye exam every two years. If your child wears prescription eyeglasses or has an eye condition, then they should have an annual eye exam.

What happens during a pediatric eye care appointment?

During a pediatric eye care appointment, your provider may first talk to you about your child’s medical history and vision concerns, if any. Then, they perform various tests to assess your child’s vision and eye health.

To evaluate the structure and function of your child’s eye, your optometrist places eye drops in their eyes to temporarily dilate the pupil. Then, they use special lenses and microscopes to closely evaluate the eye and surrounding tissue. 

After the examination, your provider discusses the findings with you. This may include vision changes that require prescription eyewear or an eye condition that needs monitoring or treatment.
